At our first glance, Learngear’s titles were so hard to categorize. It will be over a hundred categories of Learngears if we grouped them by knowledge subject. But in user experience’s point of view, there are only two types of Learngear, Linear and Framework.
Linear-type Learngears sequentially guide the content from the first page to the last page just like how reader read a book. In a different manner, the content in Framework-type Learngears can be accessed randomly in any order.
Let’s take a closer look at Linear-type Learngear, the Earth’s Structure. It was design to sequentially guide students through Inner-Earth discovering process. The surveying process in chapter 3 partially depends on the seismic waves knowledge in chapter 2.
However, if the teachers think their students are ready for chapter 3, they can bypass chapter 2 and skip right to chapter 3. There is nothing wrong with this. It’s just like skipping a few pages in a book.

The Solar System, on the other hand, is a Framework-type Learngear. The content was fundamentally designed to be used in any order with little to none dependency. If a student wants to learn something about Uranus, he can just play Uranus card without the need to play Saturn card beforehand. Also, the same concept applies for other cards as well.
By the way, teachers can start teaching Solar System from the closest planet to the Sun, the Mercury, sequentially to the furthest planet to the Sun, the Neptune. There also is nothing wrong with this.

Q: So, which type is better?
A: Nothing is better. Both types are equally beneficial but they are designed to use differently.
In most cases, deeper knowledge requires pre-requisite knowledge. You cannot teach anyone advanced accounting without basic accounting knowledge. Well, maybe you can, but the outcome will not be very good. In a different point of view, you can just teach water’s property, light’s property or leather’s property to just about anyone. Since broader knowledge does not require anything specific.
Linear-type Learngears are designed for vertical knowledge while Framework-types are designed for horizontal knowledge. Still, either type of Learngears is flexible enough to switch its role.
Expanding teaching freedom is one of the major Learngear’s goals. We will do just about everyway to break teaching limitation. Both Learngear types can exceptionally server their original purpose, while performing just as great in the other.
In the end, the ones who control teaching flow in the class are still teachers. Learngears are teaching instruments that can better serve their teaching purpose. They can choose the way they want to conduct their classes.
The classes are still their ground.
